FAQs: Colleges

When do I begin the process of applying to colleges?

Most students do the majority of their application work in the fall of their senior year. However, it is important to begin the college search process in the junior year, and then start working on the application in the summer before your senior year. The college search process takes time, organization and planning. Begin early and do not procrastinate. College First Consulting can provide guidance with each of the six primary steps in the college search.

How do I begin the application process?

Find out what is required in an application and begin collecting the materials you need. Create a folder for each college you are applying to. At the front of each folder, attach a checklist of what you will need for the application and when it is due.

How many colleges should I apply to?

Five to eight colleges is the recommended number. They should all be colleges that match your educational needs and goals. It is also good to apply to some colleges that will likely admit you and some colleges that are less likely to admit you.

Should I apply early?

It depends. If you are sure about which college you want to attend, early decision or early action might be the best choice for you. If you're not sure, keep in mind that some early application plans require that you commit early. You may want to keep your options open.

Should I use an online or a paper application?

Check wtih the college to see which is required. Most colleges prefer online applications - some may offer a discount in the application fee if you apply online. Applying online can also be more convenient, since it is easier to enter information and correct mistakes. Whichever method you choose, be sure to tell your school counselor where you have applied so your school transcript can be sent to the right colleges.

Is it okay to use the same material on different applications?

Definitely! There is no need to write a new essay or personal statement for each application. However, be familiar with the requirements for each application, and have your essay/personal statement satisfy these requirements.

What is the Common Application?

The Common Application is a standardized application used by many colleges. This allows you to simply fill out the Common Application and submit it to different colleges. Be aware that you may also need to submit supplemental materials to some colleges, and you will need to pay individual application fees for each college.

Should I apply to colleges if my admission test scores or grades are below the reported range for entering freshmen?

Yes! Test scores and grades tell only part of your story. Colleges consider many factors to get a more complete picture of you. For example, they look at the types of classes you take, your activities, recommendation letters, your essay and your overall character. Colleges are looking for all kinds of students with different talents, abilities and backgrounds.

Should I bother applying to colleges that I don't think I can afford?

Absolutely! Remember that financial aid is available to help families meet the cost of attending college. You don't know if you can afford a college until after you apply and you receive your financial aid award with your acceptance letter. Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as early as possible after January 1 to qualify for the most aid. A Net Calculator is available online to help you calculate an estimate of what you can expect to pay for college. However, be aware that this too is only an estimate!
